Corozal Water Festival

People from all over Belize came to Corozal Town on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011 for the first annual Corozal Water Festival and Expo. This event was organized by local business people as a fund raiser for the newly established "Sled Foundation", which purpose is to provide funds for Belizean children requiring medical care outside Belize.

Many local business and artists displayed there wares along the seafront. A huge verity of food was available in the food booths that accounted for almost half of the booths. Vendors paid a $25 fee for the booths, attendees paid a one dollar entrance fee and additional funds were raised through raffles and tee shirt sales. All officials and attendants were unpaid volunteers and every dime raised goes directly to the Sled Foundation.

After the playing of the National Anthem, the officials gave the obligatory speeches. The racing officials then gathered the contestants to go over the rules of day, such things as the meaning of the flags and horns, giving right of way, the layout of the course and the penalties for infractions.

There was a section of Rainbow Park devoted to the kids, with games, an arts and crafts area, and the banana boat water ride. Unfortunately all the photos we took of this part of the event were unusable due to operator error. We will attempt to obtain photos of the kids activities from an other source.

These two photos of the children's art contest were provided by Carol Livermore.

The Main Event

The Belize Sailing Association trucked down several small sailing craft and conducted a mini sailing regatta, pitting some of the local sailing enthusiasts against a few of the more experienced Association sailors. We missed the start the first race but caught the finish, with the #1 boat winning easily after the nearest opponent missed his tack.

Between races a few local novices learned a few new sailing skills. This second race was no contest, with the winner several minutes ahead of the pack. After a shout interlude the top finishers in the first two races squared off and Consejo's Ron Fioole finished second in this final race.

The organizers of this event and the Sled Foundation have plans for several similar fund raising events in the coming year. It is always great to be able to have a wonderfully fun afternoon while at the same time helping those less advantaged than ourselves.
